I just read a fabulous book entitled “Give Your Speech, Change the World”, by Nick Morgan ISBN 1-59139-714-6. The chapter that caught my interest was on the topic of crafting the elevator speech, as this is a critical skill in recruiting new members to our Toastmasters club.

The key learnings are:

1. It must contain a benefit for the potential member. Something that the person will get out of joining our club.

2. It must contain the word you, to ensure that you keep your attention directly focused where it belongs.

3. It must contain some reference to emotion in order to engage the potential member to be interested in what you have to say.

Given these key elements, your elevator speech may sound something like…

“By joining the Hutchinson Toastmasters club, you will learn how to give presentations without fear, presentations that will move your audience to action every time.”
