Better Listening, Thinking, Speaking

Browsing Posts in Meetings

contestOur fall club contest this year are the Humorist and Table Topics contests.  We currently have one speaker for the Humorist contest and three for the Table Topics.  If any club member changes their minds for a speaking role I can still switch the roles which I confirmed at this week’s meeting.  We can send two members for each contest category to the Area 64 Contest on Monday, September 20th, starting at 7:00PM  at the Watertown City Hall.  Thank you to all who are participating and are helping out.   All are welcome to attend and cheer the participants on.

I attended an officer training session today in Minnetonka. Theo Black, the DTM who lead the training offered this Club Programming Idea Cookbook. There are many great ideas for meetings, check it out!

1173_fullsizeOur club contest is coming up quickly.  Do you have a funny bone?  Can you speak on your feet?  Consider participating in the Humorist and Table Topics.  Our Club Contest is September 2, 2010 during the regular meeting time, so start writing your humorist speech today (5 – 7 minutes).  Any club member can participate in Table Topics, there is no preparation needed, just come ready to speak on your feet.  If you are interested contact the VP-Ed Chuck Schoeneberger to get on the list.  Let’s all plan to leave the meeting with sore guts from laughing so much.

Name That Tune TV game show - 1953.Television game shows often ask people to demonstrate their knowledge of facts and trivia. It’s all in good fun and the prize money builds the level of excitement. The question is:  Could you demonstrate your knowledge of facts and trivia knowing knowing millions of people are watching you?  Can you focus knowing the potential for thousands of dollars in cash, vacations, new automobiles or merchandise is riding on your correct answer?

Be ready this Thursday  to hop and shout your way to fame and riches as you ‘Name That Tune’.

lightningHave you enjoyed the rocking summer thunderstorms we have had in Minnesota since the middle of June?  Great!  Be ready to bring all your stories about all the thunderstorm experiences you have had over the years.  Daytime, nighttime, rain, hail, tornadoes, wind, all the fun aspects of thunderstorms.

I just read a fabulous book entitled “Give Your Speech, Change the World”, by Nick Morgan ISBN 1-59139-714-6. The chapter that caught my interest was on the topic of crafting the elevator speech, as this is a critical skill in recruiting new members to our Toastmasters club.

The key learnings are:

1. It must contain a benefit for the potential member. Something that the person will get out of joining our club.

2. It must contain the word you, to ensure that you keep your attention directly focused where it belongs.

3. It must contain some reference to emotion in order to engage the potential member to be interested in what you have to say.

Given these key elements, your elevator speech may sound something like…

“By joining the Hutchinson Toastmasters club, you will learn how to give presentations without fear, presentations that will move your audience to action every time.”

2010-2011 President Raymond NortonToday is the first day of the rest of your life! Have you heard or read these words before? It’s not an original quote, but it is very profound.

What have you accomplished in your life thus far? Have you realized the dreams and ambitions you have carried in your heart since you were a youth? Have you successfully achieved all of the goals in life you have set for yourself? Do you possess the confidence and leadership skills to take control of your life and walk in your full potential?

If you are like the majority of people in our world, you were not able to answer “yes” to all of the questions. However, you may have wanted to, but have not found a way to achieve this yet.

What if I told you that for $26.00 I would be willing to share a “sure fire” way for you to get on the right track of fulfilling those dreams and goals and to ensure reaching your potential. Have I caught your attention yet?

What if I told you that for the same $26.00 I can guarantee your placement on the short list of any qualified job you pursue and as an added bonus you will be able to express to family members, friends, and politicians exactly what is on your mind (in a good way of course!).

Do you suspect that this is some sort of “bait and switch offer” with strings attached? You are absolutely correct! In the fine print of my offer you must suffer from any or all of the following symptoms:

  • Shake and quake anytime someone even hints that they may call upon you for an answer to a question
  • Lose sleep at the thought of sharing what you really think.
  • Turn three shades of red and break out in a cold sweat when speaking before groups of people.
  • Hyperventilate anytime someone disagrees with you.
  • Get mad at yourself for not knowing how to respond in a crucial situation.

If you suffer from one or more of these symptoms, this offer is for you! I want to start by welcoming you to visit (as often as you like for FREE) our local Hutchinson II Toastmasters meeting every Thursday morning at 7:00 a.m. At these meetings you will find many people in various stages of the same journey of realizing their dreams and potential.

The cost to join us is a mere $26.00 a year! As an added bonus to this offer, I will throw in the most laughter and good-natured camaraderie that you will find anywhere at 7:00 a.m.

Today is the day! We look forward to your visit.

xTargetField_1The theme this week is Twins Baseball.  Be ready to bring all your memories of the team and current and past stadiums.  Have you been to the new Target Field?  Still have good memories of the Metrodome or Met Stadium?  Remember Game 163, 1991, 1987?

They’re out there! They watch everything we do. They can even read our minds! We must protect ourselves before it is too late and we all become slaves to the Alien mind control empire.

A good conspiracy theory makes for lively conversation whether you think it’s silly, believe it halfheartedly or are a conference-attending, tee-shirt buying devotee. Come prepared to debunk or defend wacky conspiracy theories.

P.S. Rumor abounds that alien invaders will be coming to abduct our EGG.  (Don’t tell anyone you heard it from me.)
